Australian Fritzl 'fathered four children with daughter he began raping in the 1970s when she was aged 11'
17th September 2009
An Australian man has been arrested on charges of raping his daughter for 30 years and fathering four children by her.
The man began raping his daughter in the 1970s when she was 11, threatening her with violence against her mother, it is alleged.
He was arrested in February after the woman approached police, the Herald Sun newspaper claimed.
Victoria state police would not immediately confirm the newspaper's details, saying a court suppression order was in place.
Accused: A Melbourne news stand displays copies of the Herald Sun today. The front page of the newspaper featured an exclusive story accusing a man of being the 'Australian Fritzl'
The man's wife, who lived in the same home with her husband, daughter and grandchildren, told the newspaper that she was unaware of the abuse.
All four children were born with health problems and one of them has died, the report said.
The daughter first told police about the alleged abuse in 2005, but no charges were laid as she said she feared for her safety and would not cooperate with police, the report said.
The Herald Sun said the man was charged with more than 80 offences. It said he has denied raping his daughter but was charged after tests showed he was the father of his daughter's children.
Victorian Community Services Minister Lisa Neville says she will make it a priority to investigate the claims, which she had not known of before the newspaper article.
'They are only allegations and are before the courts at the moment and we need to be very careful about how much detail we go into,' Neville told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.
'I don't know what, or if, (there has been) any involvement of the police, the department or other agencies ... over the past 30 years. This will be a priority to look into.'
The man will appear in court in November.
The newspaper compared the case to that of Austria's notorious Josef Fritzl, the man who was convicted earlier this year of imprisoning and repeatedly raping his daughter for 24 years, fathering seven children with her.
The case was revealed as an ombudsman report found that Victoria state child protection workers had failed to carry out police checks on carers, and had placed three children in the care of convicted sex offenders.
Now, 'Australian Fritzl' who raped daughter, fathered four kids emerges
Melbourne, September 17:
Lisa Neville, Australian Community Services Minister, has come under fire after huge number of bungling in the child protection services emerged, including a sex horror case of a man accused of fathering four children with his daughter.
Neville is expected to be faced with calls to resign after revelations of failed attempts by Victoria's Department of Human Services (DHS) to conduct proper background checks on a known sexual predator before letting a child into his care.
The accused is said to have caged his daughter as a virtual prisoner, raping her almost daily from when she was 11 years old, reports the Herald Sun.
All the four kids bore by the woman, who is now under the care of authorities in a safe house, had health problems when delivered in major hospitals in Melbourne. One of the kids died soon after birth.
Their birth certificates do not hold the name of their fathers, prompting alarms as to why questions were not asked at the time.
The man denied the allegations, but was charged after DNA tests allegedly proved he was the father of her children. He is due to appear in court in November.
Comparisons have been drawn between the case and that of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who held his daughter as a sex slave for 24 years and fathered seven children with her.
Minister Lisa Neville told ABC Radio: "I was extremely appalled to see the allegations."
"They are only allegations and are before the courts at the moment and we need to be very careful about how much detail we go into," Neville said.
"I became aware of this from the media today and I don't know what, or if, (there has been) any involvement of the police, the department or other agencies ... over the past 30 years.
"This will be a priority to look into," she added.
The allegations cover a 30-year period stretching back to the 1970s and beginning when the victim was about 11.
An Australian man has been charged with raping his daughter over a 30-year period and is accused of fathering her four children.
In a case which appears similar to that of Austria's Josef Fritzl, who sired seven children with his daughter, the alleged victim's mother, who shared a house with her daughter, husband and grandchildren until 2005, said she was unaware of any abuse.
The rapes allegedly began in the 1970s when the victim was about 11 and continued until 2007, two years after she first sought help from the police.
The woman first approached the police about the alleged abuse in 2005 but no charges were laid. She was reportedly too afraid of her father to cooperate with an investigation, but welfare advocates attacked the police for failing to pursue the case.
Yet, according to the mother, the family had been in contact with welfare workers for more than 30 years.
It was alleged that all four children were born with birth defects in major Melbourne hospitals and none had a father listed on their birth certificates. One of the children died from severe developmental problems soon after birth.
The mother said her daughter had been vague whenever she asked about the identity of the father.
"She used to say something about going out to nightclubs and meeting a fella, but then she would clam up," the mother said.
While the mother said her husband was moody and abusive she said she never suspected that he was sexually assaulting her daughter.
"We lived in a big house, so I wouldn't have known," she said. "He had a very sharp tongue. He was a drinker."
"One day she just up and left and I haven't seen her for years. The first I knew of all this is when they came and arrested (my husband)," the mother said.
The man has denied raping his daughter.
