MUMBAI: In a gruesome incident, a 25-year-old homemaker was gangraped and set ablaze in her flat in Adarsh Gharkul Cooperative Housing Society in Sion-Koliwada late on Monday evening. The victim, identified as Nadiya Devendra, died three hours after she was admitted to Sion Hospital with burn injuries. The incident occurred between 6.30 pm and 7 pm when her husband and in-laws were away and her two children were playing outside.

In her dying declaration, Nadiya, who lived in a flat allotted under a slum redevelopment scheme, told the Antop Hill police that four men, who live in the same locality, barged into the house and repeatedly raped her. When she threatened to inform the police, the accused doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.

Nadia told the police that one of the accused, Nitya Devendra, had approached her parents five years ago with a marriage proposal for her but was turned down. The police believe that this rejection could have spurred the accused to commit the gruesome crime; however, it is unclear why he decided to do this so many years later.

According to DCP (Zone IV) Sanjay Bhaviskar, three brothers—Nitya Devendra, Rajesh Devendra, Kumar Devendra—and Shankar Mudliyar were arrested from Antop Hill. While he refused to comment further, merely saying that investigations were on, a police officer from Antop Hill police station told TOI that the accused had revealed that they had been keeping a watch on the victim’s house for the past few days.

Surprisingly none of the neighbours was aware of the incident, added the officer. They found out only after the victim’s family members reached the house and rushed her to Sion Hospital.

One of the victim’s relatives, Krishna Reddy, told the media that before Nadiya got married, one of the accused had wanted to have an affair with her and even approached with a marriage proposal. “He kept harassing her when she turned him down. The accused were involved in several crimes,’’ he claimed.

Investigators said that Nitya Devendra is wanted in many cases of rape and extortion registered with Antop Hill police station. The accused have been booked for murder and gangrape.
