MUMBAI: A Gujarat-based trader was thrown out of a running train by a group of armed men near Badlapur on Thursday night. His wife, who was five months pregnant, was earlier molested by some members of the group.
Railway police officials suspect the fight started over seats. The mangled body of Dilip Salat, a Vadodara native, was later found on the tracks; he had been run over by another train. A special team has been formed to track down the unidentified attackers, some of whom are believed to be Karjat residents.
Salat (21) belonged to the Banjara community and traded in rings, gemstones and cutlery. For the past two months, he was in Pune for business with his wife Mala, brother Shyam and sister-in-law Tejal. On Thursday night, the group was travelling back to Vadodara on the Pune Veraval Express for the Navratri festival.
“Around 8.30 pm, Salat, Mala, Shyam, Tejal and a child boarded the general compartment at Pune station. The compartment was overcrowded with nearly 100-125 passengers. Salat and his relatives were sitting on the floor,’’ an official said. Some time later, a fight broke out between Salat and three men after Salat requested them to allow his wife to sit.
Salat’s wife has alleged that the men tore her blouse and hurled abuses at them.
